Original Canvas - ‘Urti’ – Quandong / Wild Peach
Yura Ngawarla: ‘Urti’
English: Quandong; Wild Peach
(Santalum acuminatum)
Found in many locations throughout the Flinders Ranges, the Urti tree grows about three metres in height.
They have long slender leaves with smooth grey stem or bark, and this plant produces a small to medium, rounded bright red fruit which is edible when ripe called the Urti.
Traditionally, the fruit and leaves have been used in medicine and other practices when the fruit and seed are dried in the sun, including decorative and creative.
Its also common to eat the flesh of the Urti by making jellies or preservatives, or baked in cakes or baked goods as the flavour can be mostly tart.
